Lighthouse and Shipwreck Tour
Gallery (Click on pictures to enlarge)

South Africa has a beautiful and very photogenic coast line. Add to the picture a lighthouse, or even an old rusted shipwreck, and now you’re talking. WOW!

The stories of the shipwrecks and lighthouses around the Western Cape coastline has for most part remained untold, and because most shipwrecks are often in very remote and isolated areas, not often photographed, or even visited for that matter.

Around the Peninsula we photograph Slangkop Lighthouse, and the shipwreck of the Kakapo, a British Steamer that ran aground in 1900 on Noordhoek beach.

The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve on Cape Point is home to two lighthouses, and the shipwrecks of the Thomas T Tucker, an American Liberty ship that ran aground on Cape Point in 1942 on her maiden voyage.

These tours all include a fair amount of walking along beautiful coastlines, and a certain level of fitness is necessary. It is a very enjoyable hike for the outdoors and nature lovers.

A boat trip to the shipwreck of the BOS 400, is available from Hout Bay, for the less active. The boat trip is however seasonal, and weather permitting.

If walking is not for you, we take a scenic drive to Cape Agulhas, the most Southerly Point of the African continent.
We stop along the route to photograph African Penguins, we visit the old harbour at Hermanus, the lighthouse at Danger Point where the Birkenhead shipwrecked. The high light of Cape Agulhas is its beautiful lighthouse, declared a national monument and the shipwreck of the Meisho Maru. The lighthouse, built in 1849, is the second oldest in the county after Green Point lighthouse and from the top you can see for miles.

Shipwreck and Lighthouse Tour - Comments

“The information received was pitched at the level we could understand although in retrospect I am still trying to understand what it is I learnt. I learnt more about my camera than reading the manual! The guidance was good. I appreciated the one on one attention and help.
David Beaumont- Britain

“I appreciated the one on one attention for me and my camera. The info supplied was good and the knowledge was comprehensive. I enjoyed the personal side of the tour, making it less of a course and made it very enjoyable for the afternoon. The ability to practice the shots explained, see the results and then correct or review made it easier to understand the camera and the conditions.”
Mark Gilmour- Britain (but now living in South Africa)
